Discovery Park - Wildflower meadow creation10/05/2024

Activities

The south meadow is dominated by exotic grasses, but we will be creating a small area devoid of grasses for planting new native wildflowers to support our many pollinators. This is the recommended way to create new wildflower meadows according to the Xerces Society and Northwest Meadowscapes. The work will mostly be overturning soil so that the existing grasses area rootside up; this will only kill them if they are robbed of sunshine for the next year. The final step will be to cover the 20'x24' area with a sun-blocking tarp. We'll hold the tarp down by covering with wood chips which will be hauled with wheelbarrows.
