Discovery Park - spurge laurel control01/16/2025
Activities
Spurge laurel is a class B noxious weed that is just coming into bloom in February. The seeds are spread by the birds, which means they proliferate where birds roost. The easiest means of control is very simply clipping the stem below the soil line. We also have a few scotch broom to extirpate it from the south meadow; we'll use weed wrenches for this quick task. We need to complete this task before the savannah sparrows start defending their nesting territory.
Adults only
3 out of 12 participants registered.
What to Bring
Gloves, work boots, weather appropriate clothes and something to stay hydrated. (I have some loaner gloves if you don't have your own) I recommend a long-johns thermal layer; the meadow tall grass is guaranteed to get us wet. We will take a water break halfway through the event. Please bring a pack for carrying water and shed layers since we will be roaming throughout the day.
Where to Meet
Meet at the large black cistern 800' west of the large white radar tower. The cistern is on the west end of the parade grounds. 47.657661, -122.416956
This is a 10-minute walk from the south parking lot (please allow enough time to walk to and from the meeting site). If you're late, look for us in the south meadow or give me a call.
