Discovery Park - Schmear away the blackberry …02/23/2024

Activities

Help us schmear away the blackberry invaders while we schmear some bagels with cream cheese. With the guidance of the UW Restoration Ecology Network, we'll be removing blackberry from one of the most scenic restoration sites in the city. We are calling the site Lizard Haven due to the many northern alligator lizards seen in the area (though not this time of year). Our primary task will be moving blackberry canes and digging up blackberry roots but we will also be spreading wood chips to keep weed seeds from sprouting. We'll have pitchforks, rakes, hand tillers, wheelbarrows and heavy duty shovels to accomplish our tasks.

As an added perk, we will get a short lesson on restoration techniques or philosophy from current students of the curriculum.

AS AN EVEN BIGGER PERK, WE'LL HAVE BAGELS AND CREAM CHEESE DONATED BY OXBOW BAKERY TO KEEP US FUELED UP FOR THE HARD WORK!
